Day 1 — Arrive Katra, Settle In & Register

Your Day 1 plan depends on when you arrive in Katra. Different trains reach at very different hours — an overnight express drops you at sunrise, Vande Bharat 22439 brings you in the afternoon, and Vande Bharat 22477 arrives close to midnight. Pick your arrival scenario below.

A

Early Morning Arrival — 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM

Shri Shakti Express (arrives ~5:45 AM) · Uttar Sampark Kranti (~8:45 AM)

  • 5:30–7:00 AM: Arrive Katra Station → auto/e-rickshaw to hotel (₹50–100). Most pilgrim hotels allow early check-in for yatris arriving overnight.
  • 7:00–9:00 AM: Freshen up, rest 1–2 hours; have breakfast. Free langar (community meal) is available near Banganga from early morning.
  • 9:00–11:00 AM: Collect Yatra Parchi / RFID card at the Banganga registration counter. Pre-registered online? Skip the queue — head straight to the counter to pick up your card in 10 minutes.
  • 11:00 AM–5:00 PM: Explore Katra market — buy prasad (coconut, chunni, dry fruits), trekking stick (₹50–100), warm jacket, and a rain poncho if it's monsoon season.
  • 6:00–7:30 PM: Evening aarti at the local Shiv Temple in Katra. Light dinner by 7:30 PM — avoid heavy or oily food the night before a trek.
  • 8:30–9:00 PM: Pack trek bag, lay out ID + RFID card + torch + snacks. Set alarm for 3:30 AM. Sleep early.
  • Day 2 trek starts: 4:00–4:30 AM | Helicopter pilgrims: report to Katra Helipad by 5:30 AM
B

Afternoon Arrival — 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM

Vande Bharat Express 22439 (arrives Katra ~2:20 PM)

  • 2:20–3:30 PM: Arrive Katra Station → auto/taxi to hotel (₹50–100). Check-in, freshen up — afternoon arrivals usually get a full room right away.
  • 3:30–5:00 PM: Head to the Banganga registration counter for Yatra Parchi / RFID card (counters open until ~7 PM). Pre-registered? Collect card and you're done in 15 minutes.
  • 5:00–6:30 PM: Katra market — buy prasad, trekking stick, and snacks. No rush; you have plenty of time.
  • 7:00 PM: Light dinner (rice, dal, roti). Pack your trek bag after dinner and keep everything ready near the door.
  • 8:30–9:00 PM: Set alarm for 3:30 AM. This is the ideal arrival scenario — you arrive well-rested and energised for a strong Day 2.
  • Day 2 trek starts: 4:00–4:30 AM | Best-rested scenario for the Yatra
C

Night Arrival — 9:00 PM to 12:30 AM

  • On arrival: Quick snack if hungry, keep trek bag ready, freshen up briefly and sleep immediately. Every hour of sleep matters for Day 2.

A

4:30 AM – 7:00 AM: Banganga to Charan Paduka

~3.5 km | ~1.5–2 hrs | Gentle paved climb

Banganga Charan Paduka
  • Banganga: First sacred spot — a natural spring where Mata shot an arrow to create water. Small temple here. RFID check at entry.
  • Charan Paduka: Revered rock imprints of Mata Vaishno Devi's feet — a significant prayer and photo stop.
  • Gradient: gradual — suitable for all fitness levels. Path is fully paved. Tea stalls open from 5 AM.
B

7:00 AM – 9:30 AM: Charan Paduka to Ardhkuwari

~4.5 km more | Cumulative ~8 km from Katra

Charan Paduka Ardhkuwari
  • Ardhkuwari is the spiritual midway — Mata meditated here for 9 months in the Garbha Joon Cave (narrow; claustrophobic pilgrims can skip and pray from outside).
  • Facilities: toilets, cloak rooms, restaurants. Take a 30–45 min break here — it is the last major rest point before the steep climb.
  • Pony and palki available from Banganga all the way to this point and beyond.
C

9:30 AM – 11:30 AM: Ardhkuwari → Sanjhi Chhat → Bhawan

~6 km | Steepest section — pace yourself

Ardhkuwari Sanjhi Chhat Bhawan
  • Sanjhi Chhat: The Katra helicopter helipad and battery car terminus. Breathtaking Trikuta Mountain views. Short rest here.
  • The final 2.5 km from Sanjhi Chhat to Bhawan is the steepest section — chant "Jai Mata Di" with the crowd for motivation.
  • Token system at Bhawan darshan — arrive before noon for the shortest wait (peak crowds: 10 AM–3 PM). Queue can be 1–4 hours at high season.
  • Bhawan: Three natural Pindis of Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, Maha Saraswati. No camera phones inside the sanctum.
D

After Bhawan: Bhairo Temple & Descent

  • Battery car from Bhawan to Bhairo Baba: ₹100–150 each way (saves the steep 45-min climb).
  • After Bhairo visit, descend via the Himkoti / Tarakote Marg route — different scenery from the ascent. Back in Katra: 6–9 PM.

  • Fare: approx. ₹1,000–1,200 per person one way (Katra → Ardhkuwari area). Check current rates at the counter — they are revised periodically.

~6 km remaining on foot | ~2–2.5 hrs | Steepest section

  • Rest 30–45 min at Ardhkuwari before the uphill push. Visit Garbha Joon Cave if you're comfortable with tight spaces.
  • The Ardhkuwari → Bhawan section (~6 km) is the most demanding — steady pacing and chanting with the crowd helps.
  • Pony services are available here if extra assistance is needed for the upper section.
  • Arrive Bhawan: ~10:00–11:30 AM — moderate crowd expected at this hour.

Pony vs Palki — Which One is Right for You?

Book from the official counter at Banganga — avoid roadside operators

Pony (Horse Ride)
  • Katra → Ardhkuwari: ₹700–900 per person
  • Ardhkuwari → Bhawan: ₹500–700 additional
  • Full (Katra → Bhawan): ~₹1,200–1,600
  • Faster than palki; follows the paved trek route
  • Available at Banganga counter; also at Ardhkuwari for upper section only
Palki (Palanquin)
  • Full trip (Katra → Bhawan): ₹2,500–4,000
  • 4–6 bearers carry you — slow but most comfortable
  • Best for elderly, unwell, or young children
  • Book a day in advance at peak seasons — limited availability
  • Upper section (Ardhkuwari → Bhawan) available separately
2

5:30 AM: Journey Begins from Banganga

Pony: ~4–5 hrs to Bhawan | Palki: ~5–7 hrs to Bhawan

Banganga Charan Paduka Ardhkuwari Bhawan
  • Pony and palki follow the old Banganga route — all key stops (Charan Paduka, Ardhkuwari) are passed en route.
  • You can mix modes: walk Banganga → Ardhkuwari, then hire a pony for the steeper Ardhkuwari → Bhawan section.
  • Ponies cannot enter the Bhawan shrine complex — you walk the final 200–300 metres on foot.
  • Arrive Bhawan: 10:30 AM – 1:00 PM depending on start time and stops taken.
3

After Darshan: Bhairo Temple + Descent

Descend on foot or hire a return pony

  • After Bhawan darshan, visit Bhairo Baba Temple. Battery car (₹100–150) or a pony can take you up from Bhawan.
  • Return pony: Hire at Bhawan counter for the descent back to Katra (~₹700–1,000). Return ponies are usually available — arrange at the counter.
  • Descend on foot: The Himkoti (new route) descent is easier on the knees and gives different scenery. Most able-bodied pilgrims walk back.
  • Back in Katra: 6:00–8:00 PM.
