Plan Your Vaishno Devi Yatra in 3 Days
Three days is the ideal duration for a comfortable Vaishno Devi pilgrimage — one day to settle in, one day for the main Yatra, and one day as a buffer for side trips or a relaxed return. This itinerary is designed for pilgrims travelling from out of town, with timing recommendations for different age groups, a budget breakdown, and a checklist of things to carry.
Day 1 — Arrive Katra, Settle In & Register
Morning: Arrive Katra (8:00 AM – 11:00 AM)
Most overnight trains/buses arrive at Katra between 5 AM and 9 AM
- Freshen up at your hotel; most hotels allow early check-in from 8–9 AM for pilgrims arriving overnight
- Have a hearty breakfast — langar (free community meals) is available near the main market throughout the day
- If you haven't already, collect your Yatra Parchi (RFID card) from the registration counter near the Banganga check-post — it's mandatory for the trek
- Online pre-registration at maavaishnodevi.org saves 30–60 minutes of queuing
Afternoon: Explore Katra Town (12:00 PM – 5:00 PM)
Rest, shop, and prepare for Day 2
- Visit Katra Market — a bustling bazaar with Kashmiri handicrafts, dry fruits, pashmina shawls, and religious items
- Pick up walking essentials: trekking stick (₹50–100), thick socks, rain poncho if monsoon season
- Buy prasad offerings — coconut, dry fruits, and chunni (red/yellow) from local shops
- Visit the Shiv Temple at Katra for an evening aarti if timing permits
- Nearby: Dashanan Temple and Mata Chintpurni Mandir are short drives away for those interested
Evening: Rest, Preparation & Early Sleep (6:00 PM – 9:00 PM)
An early night is critical — you will start at 4 AM
- Have an early dinner by 7 PM — eat light (avoid heavy oily food before the trek)
- Lay out your Yatra kit the night before: ID proof, Yatra Parchi/RFID, water bottle, torch/headlamp, medicines, snacks
- Set alarm for 3:30 – 4:00 AM
- Pilgrims who book helicopter: report to Katra Helipad by 5:30 AM; helicopter service starts at 6:00 AM
Day 2 — The Main Yatra: Bhawan Darshan
Day 2 is the heart of your pilgrimage. The trek is approximately 14 km one way from Katra to Bhawan (via the old Banganga route), or 12.7 km via Tarakote Marg. Most pilgrims complete the round trip in 10–14 hours. Starting before sunrise helps you beat the crowd and avoid the afternoon heat.
4:00 AM
Wake up, freshen up, light snack
4:30 AM
Start trek from Banganga check-post
11:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Bhawan Darshan & Bhairo Temple
6:00 – 9:00 PM
Descend & return to Katra hotel
4:30 AM – 7:00 AM: Banganga to Charan Paduka
Distance: ~3.5 km | Time: ~1.5–2 hrs
- Banganga: First sacred spot — a natural spring where Mata is believed to have shot an arrow to create water. Small temple here.
- Charan Paduka: The revered footprints (charan) of Mata Vaishno Devi carved in rock. A significant prayer stop.
- Gradient: Gradual climb — suitable for all fitness levels. Path is paved.
- Tea stalls open from 5 AM; grab a cup of chai here in the cool morning air.
7:00 AM – 9:30 AM: Charan Paduka to Ardhkuwari
Distance: ~4.5 km more | Cumulative: ~8 km from Katra
- Ardhkuwari: The midway cave shrine — one of the most spiritually significant points of the Yatra. Mata meditated here for 9 months.
- The Garbha Joon Cave at Ardhkuwari is very narrow (you must crawl through on hands and knees) — those with claustrophobia or back problems can skip it and pray from outside.
- Toilet facilities, cloak rooms, and restaurants available at Ardhkuwari — good rest stop (30–45 min break recommended).
- Pony and palanquin (palki) services available from Banganga to Ardhkuwari and beyond.
9:30 AM – 11:30 AM: Ardhkuwari to Sanjhi Chhat to Bhawan
Distance: ~6 km | Steepest section — pace yourself
- Sanjhi Chhat: Helipad for helicopters from Katra. Also the departure point for the Himkoti battery car. Breathtaking views of the Trikuta Mountains.
- The path from Sanjhi Chhat to Bhawan (final 2.5 km) is the steepest — take your time and chant "Jai Mata Di" with fellow pilgrims for energy.
- Token system for Bhawan darshan — at peak times, waiting time can be 1–4 hours. Early arrival greatly reduces wait.
- Bhawan: The main shrine has three natural rock-cut idols (Pindis) of Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati — the three forms of Mata Vaishno Devi. No camera phones allowed inside the sanctum.
After Bhawan: Bhairo Temple (Highly Recommended)
~2.5 km further uphill from Bhawan | ~45 min each way
- Visiting Bhairo Baba Temple is traditionally considered mandatory — the Yatra is believed to be incomplete without it.
- Bhairo Baba (Bhairavnath) was the demon Mata defeated; the temple marks the spot where his severed head fell.
- Altitude: 2,456 metres — stunning panoramic views from the top.
- Battery car service available from Bhawan to Bhairo Baba (saves the steep climb; fare: ₹100–150).
- After Bhairo visit, descend via the Himkoti route (new route) back to Katra for a change of scenery.
Helicopter Variant for Day 2
If you booked a helicopter (Katra → Sanjhi Chhat), your Day 2 is shorter and less strenuous:
- Report to Katra Helipad at 5:30 AM (flights start 6:00 AM)
- Flight duration: ~8 minutes to Sanjhi Chhat Helipad
- Walk ~2.5 km (30 min) from Sanjhi Chhat to Bhawan
- After darshan, visit Bhairo Temple, then descend on foot (14 km) or take helicopter back (same-day return fare applies)
- Helicopter fare: ₹1,100–1,600 per person one way; book at maavaishnodevi.org
- Elderly and physically challenged pilgrims: Panchi Helipad option allows a drop-off even closer to Bhawan
Day 3 — Optional Side Trips & Departure

- The cave is approximately 1.5 km deep and contains natural formations of Shiva, Parvati, Ganesh, Hanuman, and the Navgrahas
- Shared taxi from Katra to Shiv Khodi: ₹100–150 per person; auto-rickshaws available from Ransoo to the cave entrance
- Best visited in the morning (7–11 AM) before it gets crowded; allow 2–3 hours total
Option B: Patnitop Hill Station (~80 km from Katra)
Beautiful Himalayan meadow at 2,024 m altitude

- Activities: nature walks, photography, paragliding (seasonal), and enjoying Kashmiri cuisine
- Plan as a half-day trip — depart Katra by 7 AM, return by 1–2 PM, then head to the station
Option C: Relaxed Morning + Afternoon Departure
Best if legs are sore after Day 2 trek
- Morning puja at hotel or nearby temple, late breakfast, souvenir shopping in Katra market
