Battery car service on Tarakote Marg route for Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage

Vaishno Devi Battery Car — Is It Worth ₹450? Route, Tips & What to Expect

The electric car runs from Ardhkuwari to Bhawan (~6 km). Find out if it's right for you, how it compares to walking or pony, and what senior citizens and families should know before booking.

What Is the Battery Car Service at Vaishno Devi?

The battery car (also called electric car or e-vehicle) is an eco-friendly motorised transport service operated by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB). It runs on a section of the Tarakote Marg — specifically from Ardhkuwari to Bhawan, covering approximately 6 km of the steeper upper stretch of the yatra route.

Pilgrims must first reach Ardhkuwari from Katra (~6 km by the traditional Banganga route, or ~8 km via the Tarakote Marg on foot). From Ardhkuwari, the battery car takes over, eliminating the most physically demanding uphill section. The enclosed, cushioned vehicle offers scenic views of the Trikuta Mountains in comfort.

The battery car covers only the Ardhkuwari → Bhawan leg — not the full journey from Katra. Plan your Katra → Ardhkuwari leg separately (walk, pony, or pithu).

How to Book Battery Car Online & Offline

The battery car can be booked through two methods — online via the SMVDSB portal (recommended), or offline at the boarding shed counter on the day of travel.

Online Booking (Recommended)
  1. Go to online.maavaishnodevi.org and log in with your registered mobile number.
  2. Select "Battery Car / Electric Car" from the bookings section.
  3. Choose your travel date and direction (Ardhkuwari → Bhawan, or return).
  4. Select an available departure time slot from the calendar (green slots = available).
  5. Enter passenger details — each passenger needs valid Aadhaar/photo ID information.
  6. Complete payment via UPI, card, or net banking.
  7. Download your e-ticket PDF and carry it to the boarding point with original ID.
Offline Counter Booking

Offline booking is available at the Battery Car shed counters located at:

  • Ardhkuwari boarding point (upward journey, near the cave shrine)
  • Bhawan area (for return journey, Manokamna Bhawan, near the main temple complex)
Counter opens: 7:00 AM on the day of travel. No advance booking available at counter.
Offline seats are extremely limited. On peak days and festivals, counters sell out within hours of opening. Online booking is strongly preferred.

Online booking opens up to 2 months (60 days) before the travel date. Plan and book early especially for Navratri and holiday weekends.

Tatkal (same-day) slots may be available offline on the day of travel, subject to availability, for pilgrims who could not book in advance.

No modifications are allowed after booking confirmation. Date changes, time slot changes, or name corrections require cancellation and re-booking.

Report to the boarding point at least 30 minutes before your scheduled time slot. Late arrivals will lose their seat without refund.

No heavy luggage permitted inside the vehicle. Carry only a small personal bag. Store large bags at the cloak room in Katra before boarding.

Children above a certain height/age are charged full fare. Infants sitting on laps may travel free — confirm current policy at the time of booking.

Cancellation Rules & Refund Policy

Online battery car bookings can be cancelled through the SMVDSB portal by logging in and selecting "My Transactions under Welcome User menu".

Cancellation must be made at least 2 days (48 hours) before the scheduled travel date to be eligible for a partial refund.

Upon valid cancellation, 70% of the ticket amount is refunded to the original payment method. The remaining 30% is retained by SMVDSB as processing charges.

Refunds are processed within 15 working days and credited back to your original payment method (UPI account, bank card, or net banking account).

Physical (offline) counter tickets cannot be cancelled or refunded. This is a key reason to always book online.

For cancellation-related queries or refund delays, contact SMVDSB via the official helpline or email listed on the official Shrine Board website.

Tips for Senior Citizens & Families

These practical tips will help elderly pilgrims and families with children have the most comfortable experience using the battery car service.

Book the Earliest Slot Available

Morning slots (7:30–9:30 AM) are cooler and less crowded. Arriving at the Bhawan early ensures shorter queues for darshan. Senior citizens especially benefit from the cooler temperatures of the morning run.

Carry Medicines & Prescriptions

Senior citizens and those with medical conditions should carry all prescribed medicines, a summary medical report, and an emergency contact card. CRPF medics and first-aid posts are available at boarding points.

Pack Light — 5 kg Limit

Each battery car passenger may carry only hand luggage (no large bags). Leave suitcases, large backpacks, and extra bags at the hotel cloak room or the SMVDSB luggage storage counter in Katra.

Battery Car Booking FAQs

The most common questions pilgrims ask before booking the battery car service for Vaishno Devi.

The battery car covers the Ardhkuwari to Bhawan section — approximately 6 km of the steeper upper stretch of the yatra route on the Tarakote Marg. It does not run from Katra. Pilgrims must first reach Ardhkuwari (by trekking, pony, or pithu from Katra), then board the electric car for the remaining uphill section. The journey takes approximately 30–45 minutes.

The one-way fare (Ardhkuwari → Bhawan) is ₹450 per person (GST inclusive). The return trip (Bhawan → Ardhkuwari) costs ₹300. Differently-abled pilgrims travel free. Fares are set by SMVDSB and may be revised — confirm the current rate on the official portal before booking.

Absolutely. The battery car is the best option for the Ardhkuwari–Bhawan section for senior citizens (60+), as it eliminates the steepest and most demanding part of the trek. The fully enclosed, cushioned vehicles run on a paved road. Medical staff and first-aid facilities are available at Ardhkuwari and at the Bhawan for senior pilgrims who need assistance.

For the Ardhkuwari–Bhawan section specifically, the battery car (~30–45 min) is far faster than walking (2–3 hours) or pony (1.5–2.5 hours). Walking is free but steep. Ponies are traditional but require physical effort from the rider. For the ₹450 fare, the comfort and time saved make the battery car the clear choice for elderly pilgrims, families with children, and anyone with physical limitations.

Yes, online bookings can be cancelled up to 2 days (48 hours) before the scheduled travel date. A 70% refund is credited to your original payment method within 15 working days. The 30% deduction covers SMVDSB processing charges. Offline counter tickets cannot be cancelled or refunded under any circumstances.

No — the maximum wait time at the boarding point is 30 minutes. In rare cases (vehicle delay or fault) you may be accommodated if the battery car is running late, but this is not guaranteed.

No — you will not be adjusted into subsequent slots and you will not receive a refund for the missed slot.

Please send your battery car booking details (ticket/transaction info) to refund@maavaishnodevi.net so the refunds team can investigate and process your claim.
